'Celebrating with Liberal Democrat colleagues the first ever European Parliament plenary session to be held in Brussels, Sarah said: 'The collapse of part of the ceiling of the plenary chamber of the European Parliament in Strasbourg is a serious matter. But nonetheless, it is an ill wind......and the opportunity for MEPs to avoid the expensive, wasteful and CO2-emitting monthly travelling circus to Strasbourg is worth marking. Hopefully this will help in our reform campaign to make Brussels where we have committee meetings our one and only permanent seat."

Sarah showed her support for serious action on climate change at the Islington Friends of the Earth stall at the Angel Canal Festival on September 2nd. She said: "My fellow FoE members are telling me how much they value the real lead of the Liberal Democrats compared to Labour hypocrisy and laughably inadequate Tory gesture politics. They are particularly enthusiastic about the party's new 'Zero Carbon Britain - Taking a Global Lead' proposals which will be the centrepiece of our autumn conference. I have taken immediate action in the European Parliament to progress such a goal by leading the team of Liberal Democrat MEPs to vote against a reference in a Transport Committee resolution to allowing 60 tonne lorries on European roads."

Being keen on both history and diverse cultures Sarah Ludford [for press: Baroness Sarah Ludford, Liberal Democrat MEP for London] attended, on the occasion of the eighth European Day of Jewish Culture and Heritage, the AGM of the Jewish East End Celebration Society at the East London Central synagogue in Nelson Street, off Commercial Road. Apart from the enjoyable talks by chairman Clive Bettison, Prof Bill Fishman and playwright Bernard Kops, the focus was on the unveiling at Nelson Street of a plaque recording the greetings of Queen Victoria on the occasion of the construction of the now-closed New Street Synagogue. Sarah is pictured with Henry Grunwald QC, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews who was brought up in the Nelson Street synagogue and performed the ceremony, and (front) with Jonathan Joseph of the European Council of Jewish Communities, with whom she agreed to keep in touch with a view to him coming to the European Parliament to present his work.

Sarah was delighted at the display on Morris dancing at the Angel Canal Festival in Islington on September 2nd: "It's not just rural areas that like to see old English traditions, we metropolitan types enjoy them too! And as a Euro-MP I am constantly battling the idea that the EU is destroying our national or regional identity. This is rubbish, any sense of being European supplements and does not replace a sense of being a Londoner, English or British (or French, Polish or whatever). My vision of Europe is one in which every bit of our diverse heritage and culture is celebrated."

Sarah Ludford had the pleasure of attending a dinner hosted by the US ambassador to the EU in honour of the Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court John Roberts and two of his colleagues, Stephen Breyer and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. They had taken part earlier in a seminar with European Court of Justice judges and lawyers from the EU institutions. Sarah, pictured here with associate justice Breyer said “it is very important that lawyers and judges from the US and the EU exchange views and experience. We are the two main blocs of liberal democracies in the world, therefore the way we uphold human rights and civil liberties is vital not only to our own citizens and those in our custody but also to the international legal order. I am delighted to have had the great privilege of meeting the justices of the Supreme Court."

Sarah welcomed Lewisham Liberal Democrat Councillors Dan Houghton and Brian Robson to the European Parliament in Strasbourg where they discussed the European human rights compliance of the high-pitched 'mosquito' alarms employed by stores such as Marks & Spencers in Lewisham to disperse young people, who can hear them while older persons cannot. Sarah said: "The use of this device raises important civil liberties questions about treatment of young people, and I think some reflection about their compatibility with standards on childrens' rights and fundamental rights would be helpful."
