Mrs Evdokimova he warned of the slide into authoritarian rule in Putin's Russia and the need for the EU and MEPs to do more to challenge the destruction of democracy there. Sarah, who has several times met Yabloko leader Grigory Yavlinsky and in June took part in a European Parliament Russia delegation visit to St Petersburg, has been active in particular on the issues of abuses in Chechnya and of press freedom. She assured Mrs Evdokimova of the strong interest of the ALDE group in questions of democracy and human rights in Russia, and the two pledged to keep in touch.

Sarah went to Sofia, Bulgaria, to join her Bulgarian ALDE MEP colleagues in a solidarity event to express sympathy for the children tragically infected by HIV in the Benghazi children’s hospital, Libya, as well as to call for the release of the unjustly convicted Bulgarian nurses and Palestinian doctor, who have been imprisoned since 1998.
