Commenting on the rescue of Columbian politician and dual Colombian-French citizen Ingrid Betancourt along with other FARC hostages, the Liberal Democrats' European justice & human rights spokeswoman, London MEP Baroness Sarah Ludford MEP commented:

"As co-author of a European Parliament declaration calling for more action to secure Ingrid Betancourt's release after 6 excruciating years in captivity in the jungles of Colombia, I am delighted at this audacious and successful operation by Colombian government forces."

"But the many other hostages must not be forgotten. and the European Union must maintain pressure on both FARC and the Colombian government to secure an end to the violence altogether."
