London MEP helps "Scout" new EU youth policies

The openness of the European Commission to work with the Scout movement to develop initiatives to get more young people involved in positive activities as part of an EU effort to combat disadvantage has been warmly welcomed by London's Liberal Democrat MEP Baroness Sarah Ludford.

Sarah Ludford recently backed the World Organisation of the Scout Movement in its approach to the European Commission for partnership in addressing social exclusion of young people. After this received a positive response from the Commission, Sarah said:

"I am proud to be involved with the Scout movement in its centenary year 2007 and to support its extremely valuable role in helping youngsters of all backgrounds, colours and creeds to develop their talents and personal resources and thus strengthen society."

"The response by the European Commission in welcoming the growing interest of the Scout movement in combating the marginalisation and alienation suffered by too many of our young people shows the potential for very fruitful collaboration. Modern scouting is relevant and practical, offering positive opportunities for young people who have lost their way a bit."

"It is vitally important that the European Union, as well as national and local governments, works on the principles of cooperation to help disadvantaged youths. The problems of violent crime and youth offending cannot be solved by tough talk alone as suggested by some politicians, but alternative activities to steer young people away from trouble have a solid role to play."
