Today (12th March 2007) the European Parliament is marking European Day for the Victims of Terrorism by welcoming over 500 students, including from London, to the Parliament in Strasbourg and holding a one minute silence at 15.00 Central European Time (14.00 GMT).

Speaking from Strasbourg, London's Liberal Democrat MEP and European justice spokeswoman said:

"Today's event gives us the chance to remember the victims of the appalling attacks in Madrid in 2004 and in London in 2005, as well of all the other terrorist outrages around the world including the Twin Towers. There was and is no excuse for such despicable acts."

"The participation of students from across the EU in today's events is a poignant reminder of the need for full EU cooperation on anti-terrorism measures."
