Sarah Ludford met European Trade Union Confederation secretary-general John Monks, former head of Britain's TUC, when he spoke at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

Sarah commented:

"John Monks made a typically progressive call for openness in the European single market, including the free movement of workers instead of the limits being imposed on new Member States. He takes a lot of the credit for moving British trade unions towards a more pro-European stance in the 1990s."

"I don't go as far as him in support of EU action on social and employment matters - I think that should mostly be left to individual states - but he is right that Europe must not go down the path of America and must maintain decent and fair (though not protectionist) working conditions."
