London's Liberal Democrat MEP Baroness Sarah Ludford will tomorrow evening join campaigning comedian Mark Thomas at the 'mass lone demo' to protest for the right to protest in Parliament Square.

This series of individual demonstrations is to highlight the absurdity of the ban on protests within one kilometre of Parliament Square without prior police permission brought in under the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act at the instigation of the Labour government.

Baroness Ludford commented:

"In the wake of last week's groundbreaking decision by the Law Lords condemning police obstruction of an attempted protest in 2003 about the Iraq invasion, I will be using my protest on Wednesday to stake a claim for civil liberties in London."

"The current ban on protests in Parliament Square must be legally questionable after this important reaffirmation that the right to protest is a fundamental right enshrined in British law."
