Sarah Ludford condemns terror attacks in Madrid

2.17.00pm GMT Thu 11th Mar 2004

Commenting in the aftermath of the Madrid terrorist attack Baroness Sarah Ludford, London MEP and European justice spokeswoman for the Liberal Democrats condemned the acts and called for a unified approach to combat terrorism.

She said:

"This is a grievous atrocity and our first thoughts must be for the victims and their families. European Liberal Democrats in the European Parliament extend their deepest condolences to all those affected by this terrible act.

"It is crucial that we do not rush to judgment on this matter simply because of the scale of the casualties. Painstaking analysis is required before blame can validly be attributed to any group or movement.

"We must stand together with the strong message that our future will be determined by ballot boxes, not by bombs."
