Guantanamo Releases "a drop of good news in an ocean of injustice"

12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 30th Jan 2004

Commenting on the reported release of the three youngest Guantanamo detainees Baroness Sarah Ludford MEP, European Parliament co-rapporteur on Guantanamo Bay and justice spokeswoman for the European Liberal Democrats said:

"Without an end to the legal black hole in which all Guantanamo detainees are existing, these releases, while welcome, are no more than a drop of good news in an ocean of injustice".

"The Bush administration must realise that they sabotage their own calls for others to heed the rule of law by evading their own obligation to respect fundamental rights. This just allows the terrorists to claim victory".

"European governments must stop negotiating bilaterally with Bush and insist jointly on fair trial or liberation for all the captives. Families are being put through agony with the periodic 'cat and mouse' statements from US war crimes ambassador Prosper hinting at further releases. There must be an end to this farcical but tragic human rights outrage."
